Definition of commitment is evolving every year and I am trying to figure out problematic structures in our relations with role models in our families: Semih Kaplanoğlu

New Delhi: I am always looking at the definition of commitment in different relationships like family, society and it is something which kept me thinking for last 50 years. Definition of commitment is evolving every year and I am trying to figure out problematic structures in our relations with role models in our families. The film “Commitment” is about our dilemmas about the sense of identity, difficulty in choosing between either the role of traditional mother or modern mother. I believe cinema is a very personal art and the idea for this film came from my own feelings and life story said, Semih Kaplanoğlu, director of famous Yusuf Trilogy in press conference during IFFI 2019 at Panaji, Goa today

“We keep searching for our identity as Turkey is at the meeting point of east and west. Writers like Orhan Pamuk are also looking at the question of identity.  Countries like Turkey and India which are in this dilemma of tradition versus modernity have sensitive creative processes.

Commitment is a 2019 Turkish drama film directed by Semih Kaplanoğlu. It was selected as the Turkish entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards. The movie focuses on modern parent-child relationships and the dilemmas faced by the protagonist Asli, a young mother who is trying to find a nanny.

After leaving her job for a while to look after her baby, Asli starts searching for a babysitter to be able to return to her job. Meeting Gulnihal, also a mother triggers Asli’s confrontation with her own deepest secrets. The film will be screened in Master Frames section of IFFI 50.

Actress of movie, Commitment, Ece Yuksel said that, she likes the positivity and happy endings and dance in Indian films and she watches them because of that.

Kubra Kip, an actress of Commitment said that having become familiar a little bit more with Indian culture, she is curious to explore it further.

Coda

Coda, a Canadian film directed by Claude Lalonde tells the story of a famous pianist struggling with stage fright and depression late in his career, finding inspiration with a younger, free-spirited music critic. The film is having its World Premiere in the World Panorama section of 50th IFFI.

He said the movie tells us that many a time when we feel too bad, the solution lies in what we are and it resides within ourselves. “I have made some comedy movies too and it requires lot of seriousness too”, Lalonde said.

“It takes around a year just to write this kind of movie. Though I have not watched any Indian movies recently I liked the movie Lunchbox a lot, I like to watch Asian and especially Indian movies, said Claude Lalonde at the press conference. Sadly we don’t get to see many Indian movies in French Canada”, said Claude Lalonde, director of film Coda.

He plans to market his film in Los Angeles and Germany for now.  Unconventional Movies like Coda which speak about old age, music and depression face extraordinary trouble in marketing front, he said.

About the director

Claude Lalonde has co-written the TV movie ‘Le Grand Zele’ and ‘Les troisp’ tits cochins’ which earned him the title of Best Comedy and Best Box Office in Canada in 2007. He co-wrote the film ‘Filiere 13’ while 10 ½’ has been his solo work. His feature film ‘3 little pigs 2’ was a great success at box office.
